TABULATION FROM THE MATER HOSPITAL WHICH SHOWS A SURGE IN COMPLAINTS AGAINST THE MATER GYNAECOLOGY AREA, AND THE MATER RADIOLOGY AREA in 2010/2011--The tabulation below is a public document obtained from The Mater Hospital through Freedom of Information:

The email below from Stephen Desmond to The Mater Hospital & Mason Hayes & Curran on 2nd October 2019 states:

  1. You sent me a tabulation below (attached) of the amount of patient complaints filed against the gynaecology area and the radiology area in the Mater in 2011. In 2009 there were only 11 complaints against the radiology services and 8 complaints against the gynaecology services. In 2011 this jumped to  41 complaints against the radiology service and 23 complaints against the gynaecology. By 2013 the numbers had dropped back down significantly to 5 complaints against the radiology service and 10 complaints against the gynaecology service.
  • Can you please send me all documents which indicate or answer or touch upon in any way "How many of the 41 complaints against the radiology area in 2011, and 23 complaints against the gynaecology area in 2011 detailed in the attached hospital-issued-spreadsheet (for the year 2011) relate to the late diagnosis of cancer? "
  • Can you please send me all documents which indicate or answer or touch upon in any way how the hospital responded to this surge in complaints and measures they took to reduce those complaints to more acceptable levels by 2013.
  • Can you please send me all documents which indicate or answer or touch upon in any way how the hospital responded to internal or external monitoring bodies or committees, etc: patient safety, quality control, risk management, etc. in relation to this surge in complaints in 2011 and measures they took to reduce those complaints to more acceptable levels by 2013.

This email and request was unanswered.

Please note we do not assert on this webpage or in the email contained herein (above) that the surge in complaints recorded in this document from the Mater Hospital actually constitute complaints about the late-diagnosis of cancer. However, given the fact that Maureen Desmond was late-diagnosed with gynaecological cancer by approximately 2 years, and The Coroner's findings that 2 distinct opportunities were missed to diagnose her, then it is a matter of public interest that full clarification be issued by the Mater Hospital as to whether any of these recorded complaints in the tabulation above relate to the late diagnosis of cancer.
